— I used to buy a lot of MP3s. I don't anymore. That's not to say I don't listen to MP3s. I have about 10,000 of the little guys squeezed like vienna sausages into my iTunes music folder, and I listen to them a lot. But when I buy music today I buy it on vinyl. I'm no audiophile, no retro hepcat, but my ears tell me that...Why you can't afford to resist the cloud

Why an organization was targeted was not nearly as important...F5 Friday: Why SSL VPN Still Matters
— #mobile #vdi #infosec Scale and flexibility make SSL VPN an important part of any corporate remote access strategy You might have noticed a couple of news items from F5 this week that appeared related. If you noticed you were right, they are. First, we were very excited to announce recognition of our hard work on...Why RAID and Erasure Codes Need to be Considered in Disk Purchases
— Recently, I spent a few days with Garth Gibson, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University and the founder of Panasas, an enterprise server and storage company. Garth and I were in Singapore for a review with the Data Storage Institute. Garth is best known for the research paper that he authored with David Pat...Microsoft's Windows 8 tablet strategy is based on their desktop OS and not their phone OS. That's stupid.
— Back when the iPad came out in April 2010, I showed mine to a friend who didn't like it. "This thing is nothing more than an iPod Touch with a bigger screen." "Yeah?" I thought, "that's why it's so brilliant!" The iPad is just a big iPod Touch. They didn...(read more)Cloud computing: why all of the vehemence?
— It would be wise of IT and facilities practitioners to focus on where and how new technology or new approaches can be of use to the organization rather than trying to fight them. Why Your Phone Hasn't Been Updated Yet
— A smartphone may be smaller than a computer, and many are also tougher to update.Remember that FUIT / Consumerization article I wrote six months ago? We launched ConsumerizeIT.com to address it.
— Many people read the article I wrote six months ago called " The Consumerization of IT: Why most vendors get it wrong, and why it's a real challenge today. (Part 1) ." Whether it was e-mail, word processing, graphical images or even some more current like the apps on your smart phone, each new innovation typically starts out somewhat proprietary and incompatible.Today we live in a world where a lot of those bat...Presenting Tomorrow at University of Washington
— I’m not sure why it all happens at once but it often does. Last Monday I kicked off HPTS 2011 in Asilomar California and then flew to New York City to present at the Open Compute Summit. I love HPTS. It’s a once every 2 year invitational workshop that I’ve been attending since 1989. T...The International Internet Home Theatre
— Since settling in Sydney, I’ve been dabbling in setting up internet home-theatre. My name is Catherine Liao and welcome to my blog. Under news you'll find the latest postings of various blogs I follow. The topics tend to center around WAN Optimization, Cloud Computing, Data Center, Virtualization, Servers, Web Technologies and 24x7 Operations.
These are topics that I'm interested in as I've spent a large chunk of my professional career building, deploying, and maintaining 24x7 application delivery environments. I use the knowledge I've garnered daily in my role as a Business Development Manager for Cisco.
I should note that this site is my personal site and does not reflect the views of Cisco.
I'm also very passionate about wine and have created a mobile platform for wine lovers to remember and share the wines they are having. How often have you asked yourself "What was that great bottle of wine I had last night"? Corkbin solves that problem by being your pocket wine memory. The app records the label, notes, & gps location of a wine so that you can look it up the next time you're in a restaurant or wine shop.
Feel free to drop me a note if you find this site useful or if you'd like for me to check out your blog. I can be reached at catherine.liao@gmail.com. You can also connect with me via LinkedIn or Twitter.
