— San Antonio is known for its TexMex and margaritas, yet something that many people overlook is our technology scene. This is quickly changing. — As noted in previous posts, capacity efficiency has two dimensions: allocation efficiency and utilization efficiency. Allocation Efficiency Allocation efficiency is what most people think of first: eliminating the waste of over-allocation. In open systems this has been a major problem since we may not know ahead of ti...Herding Cats: No Bubble People (February 2012)
— kitten, by Clevergrrl Have you checked out ISSA Connect yet? The next issue is up there with my column, No Bubble People. We must assume malware will end up in our network. Unless we treat our users like the Boy in the Bubble, they will click things and infect themselves—many times without ev...Oracle-HP: How things got this bad
— Oracle and HP used to coexist quite well -- People forget that the first Oracle Exadata ran on HP hardware. Then Oracle bought Sun and things went downhill fast. Public spats played out in CEO letters to The New York Times, and now court documents.People, Process & Technology
— I am often asked how I do things and why. In most cases it really does come down to thinking about three things and making sure they are properly tended to at all times. Those three things are people, process and technology in that order. With the right people you can do anything you can set your mind to doi...Like Cars on a Highway.
—  Every once in a while, as the number of people following me grows (thank you, each and every one), I like to revisit something that is fundamental to the high-tech industry but is often overlooked or not given the attention it deserves. This is one of those times, and the many-faceted nature of any application inf...New EMC + vSphere Techbooks–get em while they’re hot!

— Seth Finkelstein, a long-time crusader against online censorship, made what seemed like a jaundiced comment on my recent post Piracy and Privacy. I had raised the possibility that online activists, fresh from their SOPA fight, might now come to the support of efforts to give people more control over the personal inform...VMware Reports 67 Percent Profit Increase
— VMware posted quarterly net income of $200 million (46 cents per share) -- up from $120 million (28 cents per share) in the same period a year earlier. - VMware, the world's largest virtualization software and services provider, popped open at least a few people's eyes Jan. 23 when it announced a whopping 67 perce...Live Webcast: Simplified, Anywhere, Applications Access with Oracle Secure Global Desktop
— If you are involved with end user applications in your organization, you've probably come across the following hurdles: People want to work from home, and they might even be against installing VPN software. People want work on various machines, not just their work issued...Picking the top technologies in a wild year
— Whenever someone asks me how InfoWorld differs from other IT publications, I cite two facts off the bat: Most of our articles are written by experienced, working IT people -- and we're one of the few publications that still does real enterprise product reviews.IBM Online Simulator Makes Smarter Computing a Reality for CIOs
— Sometimes the best way to demonstrate the benefits of new technology is through more technology, like a cool online simulator. The kind of tool that lets people punch in information and receive instant feedback on possible alternatives. Add dynamically-built bar graphs and reports, and you’ve got something spe...Remember that FUIT / Consumerization article I wrote six months ago? We launched ConsumerizeIT.com to address it.
— Many people read the article I wrote six months ago called " The Consumerization of IT: Why most vendors get it wrong, and why it's a real challenge today. (Part 1) ." And ever since then, most people have been asking me "When are you going to write Part...(read more)Smaller Companies and Larger Data Centers
— For months I’ve been preoccupied with Lew’s Law, or the theory that IT expenses over time will track to the cost of electricity (versus hardware, peoplepower, etc.) authored by Cisco Cloud CTO Lew Tucker and shared in early 2010 with the then-billowing Infrastructure 2.0 Working Group. After watching an SAP web...Google Translate conversation mode expands to 14 languages

— The Internet is just as important as water, food, air and shelter to a third of people with Internet access, according to an international poll by Cisco. The Disappearing Datacenter….
— By Christian BeladyGeneral Manager of Datacenter Advanced Development Sustainability is an interesting thing. It really means so many things to so many people but I really like the way it is defined in Wikipedia; “Sustainability is the capacity to endure.” Clearly, when taken in the...The Internet of Things [Infographic]
— In 2008, the number of devices that connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people. That number continues to rise, thanks to a growing number of connected devices. Cisco has put together this infographic to showcase the growth of the Internet of things.New Zealand, Aotearoa
— There aren't many people here. Major bonus. High season on the south island feels like low season in Europe. And secondly, there's not a lot of industry outside of agriculture and a king's shit load of rugged terrain, making it possible to be off the grid for days. No cell phone access if you point in the right directi...Auditors Just Don’t Understand Security
— Part of my new role as the Information Security Program Owner at NI is taking care of our regulatory compliance concerns which means I spend quite a bit of time dealing with auditors. Now auditors are nice people and I want to preface what I'll say next by saying that I think auditors do perform [...]About
My name is Catherine Liao and welcome to my blog. Under news you'll find the latest postings of various blogs I follow. The topics tend to center around WAN Optimization, Cloud Computing, Data Center, Virtualization, Servers, Web Technologies and 24x7 Operations.
These are topics that I'm interested in as I've spent a large chunk of my professional career building, deploying, and maintaining 24x7 application delivery environments. I use the knowledge I've garnered daily in my role as a Business Development Manager for Cisco.
I should note that this site is my personal site and does not reflect the views of Cisco.
I'm also very passionate about wine and have created a mobile platform for wine lovers to remember and share the wines they are having. How often have you asked yourself "What was that great bottle of wine I had last night"? Corkbin solves that problem by being your pocket wine memory. The app records the label, notes, & gps location of a wine so that you can look it up the next time you're in a restaurant or wine shop.
Feel free to drop me a note if you find this site useful or if you'd like for me to check out your blog. I can be reached at catherine.liao@gmail.com. You can also connect with me via LinkedIn or Twitter.
