In an interesting bit of serendipity, two powerful ideas have connected that give light to a fascinating new career pathway for... — During my many decades as a technology guy, I've been exposed to all sorts of interesting things: compilers, AI, networks, security, processors, databases, virtualization, apps, mobile, etc. etc. But no technology has held my interest over the many years as... Update your feed...RES Software Announce HyperDrive: follow-me-data more than sharing files or dropping stuff in a box
— RES is joining a crowded party of file sharing solutions but they bring a cloud pricing license structure to a on-premise file sharing solution. The RES Hyperdrive solution can span a range of end-devices be they VDI, desktop or a hybrid and at an interesting price point. With clients for PC, Mac, Windows mobile, Black...Marchitecture 101
— There was an interesting discussion on one of the table-top wargame lists I belong to (Two Hour Wargames if you follow the hobby) about the “production value” of a given set of printed products. While it devolved (as web conversations often seem to) to a comparison with Hollywood, the point was valid. The origi...Innovative Datacenter Design: Ishikari Datacenter
— Occasionally I come across a noteworthy datacenter design that is worth covering. Late last year a very interesting Japanese facility was brought to my attention by Mikio Uzawa an IT consultant who authors the Agile Cat blog. I know Mikio because he occasionally translates Perspectives articles for publication in Japa...Building an Application upon Riak - Part 1
— For the past few months some of my colleagues and I have been developing an application with Riak as the primary persistent data store. This has been a very interesting journey from beginning to now. I wanted to take a few minute and write a quick "off the top of my head" post about some of the things we le...Microsoft COSMOS at HPTS
— Rough notes from a talk on COSMOS, Microsoft’s internal Map reduce systems from HPTS 2011. This is the service Microsoft uses internally to run MapReduce jobs. Interesting, Microsoft plans to use Hadoop in the external Azure service even though COSMOS looks quite good: Microsoft Announces Open Source Based Cloud Ser...The SaaS Aggregation Benefit Mirage
— In this service oriented on-demand world I’ve been running into something again and again lately that I’ve found interesting and a bit annoying. To start, imagine I’m going to build an application that uses two 3rd party services on-demand. We’ll just call them service A and service B and s...Stop Staring at my Polyglot!
— I received an interesting comment/question via my blog recently. It went a bit like this... I won’t get into exactly what it is they are doing ...The Disappearing Datacenter….
— By Christian BeladyGeneral Manager of Datacenter Advanced Development Sustainability is an interesting thing. It really means so many things to so many people but I really like the way it is defined in Wikipedia; “Sustainability is the capacity to endure.” Clearly, when taken in the...Challenges and Trade-offs in Building a Web-scale Real-time Analytics System
— Ben Black always has interesting things on the go. He’s now down in San Francisco working on his startup Fastip which he describes as “an incredible platform for operating, exploring, and optimizing data networks.” A couple of days ago Deepak Singh sent me to a recent presentation of Ben’s I found interesting:...A peek behind the scenes at Hotmail
— For an interesting discussion on Windows Live Hotmail and the importance of operating and engineering the service (at huge scale), please visit the Windows Live Team’s Blog site and Arthur de Haan’s December 22, 2009 posting titled: A peek behind the scenes at Hotmail /gfsBriefly speculated for web server farms for electricity management

My name is Catherine Liao and welcome to my blog. Under news you'll find the latest postings of various blogs I follow. The topics tend to center around WAN Optimization, Cloud Computing, Data Center, Virtualization, Servers, Web Technologies and 24x7 Operations.
These are topics that I'm interested in as I've spent a large chunk of my professional career building, deploying, and maintaining 24x7 application delivery environments. I use the knowledge I've garnered daily in my role as a Business Development Manager for Cisco.
I should note that this site is my personal site and does not reflect the views of Cisco.
I'm also very passionate about wine and have created a mobile platform for wine lovers to remember and share the wines they are having. How often have you asked yourself "What was that great bottle of wine I had last night"? Corkbin solves that problem by being your pocket wine memory. The app records the label, notes, & gps location of a wine so that you can look it up the next time you're in a restaurant or wine shop.
Feel free to drop me a note if you find this site useful or if you'd like for me to check out your blog. I can be reached at catherine.liao@gmail.com. You can also connect with me via LinkedIn or Twitter.
